Dickstick.
P.9 spells out that all units are always in one of three statuses:
Good order
Disordered
Routed
P.23 spells out the sequence of play in phases:
Movement
Shooting
Combat
Rout & Pursuit
Victory
A unit may move to “routed†status in any of the phases: Movement, Shooting or Combat. During those phases the unit remains on the table with a “routed†marker. (A unit may also become Routed during the Rout & Pursuit phase).
In the OP, the unit was routed during the Movement phase by a flank contact when already in contact on its front edge. It was only AFTER  the unit attained “routed†status that the frontal opponent disengaged.
When the turn sequence reaches the Rout & Pursuit phase we ask, “At the time the unit was routed, was it ONLY contacted on its side or rear edge?†In the OP the answer to this question is ‘no’. At the time the unit was routed it was also contacted on its front edge.
Because the unit was contacted on its front edge at the time it attained routed status it DOES NOT turn (and inflict a cohesion hit on its neighbour) before being removed from the table. |

Not seen this in 10 years.
At the time we are to actually do the rout we consider whom ewe are in melee with. Not remember a past positioning.
Where does it say that? _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

Not quite Dickstick.
P61 multiple attacks, 1st bullet says that a disorder marker is applied immediately the second attack happens.
The act of doing this causes a rout marker (P9 status) to be applied and the main unit is defined at that point (ie. the unit in front of routing enemy.)
Note; AGLG does not make clear that some actions happen immediately mid-phase (like this one) while most other actions happen at the start or end of a given phase. |

I see what you are saying.
But unfortunately you don't seem to see you are choosing the main opponent for the melee before it never happened during the movement phase. Thus giving a different result. Would you do this if the rout marker wasn't placed because the hits were insufficient? would you make the main opponent the broken off unit, clearly not, you wait to the melee phase to choose the main unit. When there is but one choice.
I've always seen the choosing at the point in the rout phase ie after the melee phase _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

I suspect the main reason for confusion on this point is that ADLG does indeed appear to make it clear on p68 that the consequences and implementation of routs are an action which happens in the end phase, rather than taking place immediately the rout status is attained.
p68. Routed Units, 1st bullet
"* Routs and pursuits are conducted at the end of the players sequence, after the resolution of all combats."
Given virtually all Routs involve a unit attaining "Routed" status in the melee, shooting or movement phases, ie before this end sequence, it's hard to see why this rule would exist if it didn't mean "All Routs and pursuits are conducted at the end of the players sequence, after the resolution of all combats".
The subsequent bullet ..
"* If the units is in melee, and is only being attacked on its flanks and/or rear when Routed, the unit is reorientated to face the main enemy"
.. describes exactly a situation in which a unit which has attained Routed status earlier in the turn sequence is turned before the Rout is conductued - again making it difficult to see why some types of Rout might be exceptions to these two, pretty consistent bullet points.
Don't get me wrong - I can absolutely see how p61 could be read as saying that this one very niche and specific type of rout is an exception to these two bullets - but that would mean setting aside what are two very clear bullet points that both suggest the opposite, and both of which are located on the page of the rules that explains "How Routs Are Done" - in order to allow one (kinda) hidden(ish) implication from the middle of a set of bullet points on a page about multiple combats (not Routs) to take precedent in this one very, very specific corner case. Which does seem quite strange.
The reason why this niche exception to the general "How Routs Work" rule might exist in the first place is also something which I am personally struggling to fathom. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

P.9 makes it clear that a unit routed during the Movement phase is removed from the table at the end of that phase (last sentence). So the OP situation no longer exists once the game has moved to the Combat or Rout & Pursuit phases.
Thus the melee-related ‘turning rule’ is irrelevant, sans fromage. |

Yup, that's my point apropos the OP. During the Movement Phase the unit is being attacked simultaneously by enemy on its side AND front edges, causing the rout. It will be removed at the end of the Movement Phase and never reach the Combat Phase. This particular rout is fully resolved and there is no melee.
With the routed unit no longer on the table, and the fact that it was contacted on its front edge at the time it routed, come the Rout & Pursuit Phase the "turn to face your Nemesis" rule is simply irrelevant. |

If it was simply irrelevant there would be no debate.
The routed unit is on the table until the rout phase not removed in the movement phase.
Do you even understand another point of view zoltan?
What is wanted it seems is a rule the one cannot disengage from a routed unit. _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

P.9 Routed
“When a unit has lost all its cohesion points, it is routed…..It is eliminated and removed from the battlefield at the end of the current Phase.â€
So a unit routed in the Movement Phase per the OP is removed at the end of the Movement Phase.
A unit routed as a result of shooting is removed at the end of the Shooting Phase.
We don’t need more rules - we already have plenty! |

Zoltan and all, I don’t think Dickstick is disagreeing with the process, rather he is just asking about the direction the routing unit goes.
My view is that this direction is determined at the point when the unit routs. In all other phases the unit routs at the end of the phase, here it occurs midway during the movement phase (remember the rout and pursuit phase is merely to do with movement not the act of being routed)
Does that make sense? |

That may be what is on p9, however the section on multiple attacks also explains that in situations where a multiple attack causes a rout, “no melee is fought†… which rather suggests that in this case the rout move and consequences take place in the end (Rout and Putsuit) phase … “as if†the rout had happened in melee …Â
That’s the point of confusion …  is the bullet point in the multiple attacks section an exception to the general rule on p9? _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

At the time it routed (when the final cohesion loss was applied) the unit was being attacked on its front edge (the camels had not yet disengaged).
Thus we ignore the rule that says, “If at the time it was routed the unit was only being attacked on its side/rear edge, it first turns to face its opponent in order to calculate any consequential cohesion loss to nearby friendsâ€. That rule is not relevant to the OP scenario.
In answer to the OP, this router is not for turning. |

DS don't go. I think you are making your points clearly. It's just that people are locked into their own interpretations. Happens a lot.
Mostly off the cuff, I believe you can rout in the movement phase thusly:
o Multiple attack
o Interpenetration by Panic inducing friends (voluntary except when Fleeing a Flank March)
o Fleeing a Flank March
o Burst Through
I have to think page 9 is erroneous. It seems contradicted by omission, by every other reference to Rout.
As far as I can see, the (original) question only arises because you want to get a free hit on an enemy situated on the other flank. You could disengage first and flank attack second, and usually getting the same result except when rolling badly.
From a game design perspective, you either want to:
avoid some rare cheese so note the direction of the Rout when the marker is placed
avoid "memory" so Rout in the direction before you in the Rout phase.
DS's solution satisfies both at the expense of disallowing Disengagement with a defeated enemy - which makes narrative sense.
