I have recently rediscovered Essex miniatures having previously been put off by the terrible painting examples they use. They do actually paint up quite nicely and shown here.

The Essex ranges vary. As you would expect for such an established business. Having said that, they always scrub up nicely, if you put the work in.

Essex figs are clean, with decent detail and well cast and consistent sizes. The issues I have with them are (1) unimaginative poses and (2) lack of variation in poses and equipment per pack. They also tend to be heavyset and the horses pretty big.

(1) both foot and riders are generally at rest with a polearm held upright in the right hand with the butt resting on the ground (or right foot for riders). (The horses are usually galloping along…) They generally have pictures that show the pose.

(2) can be overcome somewhat by buying multiple packs and especially by getting figures from their more recent ranges which now generally seem to have 2-4 variation

Some of the older ranges also have very dubious interpretations of weapons and armor. Think their old Han Chinese and their Khitan Liao. Some of these have been redone (Han) while others have not (Khitan). Newer ranges seem much better in this regards.

One other issue (for me at least) is the lack of high quality detailed photos. This hinders painting them as you don’t have good inspiration to draw upon and it can be tricky to know what that tiny detail should be.

Overall with Essex you get ok to good figures but rarely great ones.
