Element "E" begins its movement BEHIND the straight line extending the enemy's rear edge, but NOT in the zone as defined above.
So why can it still contact the flank?

You're right. The rules and the diagram are contradictory.

I'd tend to go with the diagram for now as there's less likelihood of a mistranslation. If that's what it is.

We need a clarification on this point putting into the FAQ.

...it must be a translation error, I think to understand the French text correctly that says "if it begins its movement with his front edge fully or partially BEHIND that line that extends the enemy's front edge...". Thus no mention of the rear edge extending line.

So the English translation must be wrong. If so, should be clarified in an errata...
