|
From the US Yahoo list:
If the defender places a village he must also place a road connecting it to the table edge. The road is free.
Villages are placed before most other terrain. Roads are placed after.
So when is this free road placed?
The final answer should probably go into the FAQ. |

This specific road is totaly linked with the village. So you must place it at the same time that the village. Afterwards, it is possible for one of the players to place a further road and this one may be connected to the village or to it's specific road. _________________ patrick lefebvre

That was how I played it. It is a minor point. But it should be clarified. |

The rules are clear on this question, so don't need a FAQ IMO.
The village is placed first with its associated road. Then the other terrain is placed. Finally the road terrain piece is placed. |

An alternative view?
The rules say the road is the last to be placed, and as it goes over other terrain this is sensible.
The village paragraph does not say the free road must be laid at the same time.
I suggest at the end of terrain laying the defender who has placed a village places the free road connecting to it, then whoever picked another road lays that. |

While I understand the intention behind your suggestion, it is not what the rules say.
The separate steps for placing terrain are presented on p67. The rules then use separate paragraphs to discribe how the four distinct types of terrain are to be placed. The paragraph about placing the village contains the instruction to place the road as well, indicating that this gets placed at the same time as the village. Consequently the village road gets placed before players know where the rest of the terrain will be placed.
Furthermore this village road also restricts the placement of other terrain pieces, since only the road terrain piece is allowed to be placed over other terrain pieces when it is placed last.
I believe this restriction is intentional. |

hmm I see your case. I had just assumed that any terrain that went down on top of the road from a village the road just went through it. I can see your understanding too. |

Have to think about this, but if the road associated with the village restricts other terrain this could lead to some potentially "gamey" roads looping around the table to prevent other terrain from going down... |

I think if the free road is laid with the village then other terrain should be able to be laid beneath it to stop gamey road layouts unreasonably blocking terrain. If it is laid with other roads no problem. |

To be fair I agree that this approach is potentially contentious. There is no constraint on the placement or direction of the 'village' road, and equally none on the road terrain piece, other than the length.
I will check the French forum to see if they have an answer. |

The French reply is as follows.
- The 'village' road is placed with the village before the other terrain.
- This road does not restrict the placement of other terrain. In all cases, terrain always gets put under roads.
- Roads need not be straight. They can contain curves and may end at an angle to the edge (or terrain).
