The penultimate paragraph on p 78 starts “Once all units have been placed on the table, the player announces to their opponent that their deployment is complete.â€

When exactly does this announcement occur? In particular, if the third command is flank marching or in ambush, do you announce your deployment is complete once you finish placing your second command because at this point all of your units have been placed on the table?

Hi Kevin,

I would say the announcement happens after you have either deployed your third corp or told your opponent that they can't see your third corp (it could be in ambush or on a flank march) when it was time to deploy your third corp.

I think the question only comes relevant if the defender has an unseen command..
Do they announce it before attacker deploys the second command or wait until it's time to (not) depoy the defender's third command?

I've always waited until the second attacker command has gone down as it's more to my advantage but is that correct?

Pondering....

It could also help the defender as they’d know if there was a flank march (or huge ambush) when they put out their 3rd command.

The misdirection as to ambush or FM might encourage attackers to ambush their 3rd corps (or get terrain and ambush markers to do so) where there’s not much of an incentive to do that now…

Just more opportunities for fog of war perhaps…

This way is certainly the most fun for both players - keeping the mystery of flank marches / ambushes alive is hard enough as it is anyway without trying to find a way to allow an attacker to deploy two of their three commands in full knowledge of the existence of such a subterfuge.

It’s also consistent with the RAW too for any disciples of Barker still out there - the quoted section just says tell your opponent once all your other troops have been deployed - there’s no additional text saying “…and before they start deploying their next commandâ€â€¦Â

There is some merit in attacker declaration on a none visible command once command 2 goes down.
What does a defender do with the last command if it is not already committed to a flank march?
A) if centre command is last command then it's not their problem.
B) if flank command. Will you face a command that was committed to the opposite flank anyway. Oops.
Or sit facing a non arrival due to dice / redirected arrival to enemy side of table.
C) just be more interested in the ambush markers.
D) just deploy to rush the enemy regardless.

Only once had a defender send out a flank march.
Too much terrain on table restricted his deployment space.
Never added so much terrain to a defender maxing out on terrain first.
