Suppose there is a road through a village (or through a woods, plantation, etc).
Can you place an ambush along the road in the village.
Ambushes are allowed in villages but not on roads. Which takes precedence? |

I don't have my rules with me at the moment (left them in the hotel)
Do they say you can't ambush on a road in suitable terrain?

As in v3 there are no ambushes possible on a road.
No that I spotted it back then.
So in the village you can straddle the road as long as no one is properly on the road.
Effectively it means no fast moves out of a village by mounted down a road. _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

They simply say no ambush on a road
There has been a long debate on this in french. Eg how about a place otherwise hidden behind a hill, but crossed by a road |

So don't deploy ambush on the road.
To be on a road you can't be partly on and off, so deploy only partly on the road.
One needs to be only on the road to gain road advantages and therefore the same must apply to disadvantages.

For what its worth, a better use of the road from the village is to run it across your deployment zone to the far edge of the table. Thus replacing the late lamented "redeployment road"

I think it is even more restrictive than that. Even partially on a road is on a road, like partially visible means it can be seen. Similarly a unit can be partially in rough or difficult and get all of the disadvantages without any of the advantages. E.g. troops with their back edge in, or even the tiniest just part of their front projecting out.
Moving back from the semantics of the written rules also what examples exist of ambushes astride roads, rather than waiting to jump out on unsuspecting enemy passing along them? |

I can't seem to find the restriction that an ambush marker cannot be astride a road. Can someone please provide the reference?
I'm also not seeing anything that says a road affects visibility. |

Good grief, don't over do this, it's not a minefield.
Anyone saying a road stops an ambush in a wood or village or even behind a hill needs to get a grip.
Roads do not give visibility into terrain. _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |

Lionel,
Perhaps this dogmatic statement is not helping .
Do the french run roads round the back of hills to stop ambushes?

I will try to amplify Lionel's succinct answer:-
The text on terrain description is very clear pp71-72. Each type of terrain is presented and summarised in the table at the foot of p72; in all cases it is not permitted to place an ambush on a road.
When an ambush is discovered (p77), Citation: | all units placed in the ambush are deployed on the table respecting the following rules:
▪ All units of the ambush must form a valid group and must be inside the terrain or out of sight of the enemy at the start of its movement.
(my emphasis) | So the units may not be placed on the road either. Is that clear enough ??
So Dickstick, according to the text units may not be placed on a road irrespective of where the road is situated. |
