Suppose you have to shift one of your friendly units (A) in order for another (B) to conform to enemy (X). (P 52.)
If B would have to move 20mm to its rear in order for A to conform, but only 10mm to the side, does A move 20mm to its rear or 10mm to its side?
Or, is End1 or End 2 correct?
Before:
..XXXX
AAAA
AAAABBBB
AAAABBBB
……….BBBB
End 1:
..XXXX
..AAAA
..AAAA
..AAAA
……….BBBB
……...BBBB
……...BBBB
End 2:
..XXXX
..AAAA
..AAAABBBB
..AAAABBBB
………….BBBB |

P52, Conformation and shifting units, 2nd bullet
Citation: | Units are shifted the minimum distance necessary in priority to the rear then to the flank. |
Here I think it would be backwards only. |

So moving to the rear has priority over the shortest move? |

Hello, for me the main point is the shortest distance : to the tear if it is shorter or to the flank if it is the shortest. _________________ Space Rookie |

I think the first to rear then to the flank language might be intended to say "displaced without rotation" without resorting to technical language.
You can construct - as a thought experiment rather than a real example - situation where you would have to keep shuffling the unit back and to the side and back again. |

Guys, I think this is simple. Consider the diagram p53 on shifting units, which covers the case in this thread. This shifts the unit to the rear. All else being equal the unit will always be displaced to the rear. However there may be other circumstances which prevent this displacement to the rear (being in support, edge of the table etc), at which point the units may be moved sideways instead. |
