Hi Guys,
This has been an ongoing debate for a while now.
In terms of evade movement what is an 'obstacle'?
In UK play an 'obstacle' is typically defined as impassable terrain, enemy units and friendly units which cannot be interpenetrated.
In continental Europe play that list also includes all terrain.
I suspect it comes down to the original French text and the English translation into 'obstacle'.
I would appreciate a simple ruling (and addition to the errata) stating what is considered an 'obstacle' in the evade rules.

There are 4 points to consider.
1. The ambiguity in the rules which say you may not avoid rough or difficult terrain immediately behind within 1 UD and so must enter, begging the question what if it's further than 1 UD?
2. The assertion from Dan (US national referee) some years ago that you cannot avoid it ever.
3. The recent interpretations (the first file over on the Facebook site) by Patrick Lefebvre (former rules committee member) that you can avoid it after 1UD.
4. The clarifications for version 3 (also a file on the Facebook site) which allow you to avoid after 1UD.
As I understand it, provisional rules interpretations come from the rules committee. The errata are definitive. Thus, Dan's and Patrick's opinions certainly carry weight, but are not official.
This question has been rattling around since version 4 came out. I do not understand why it has not been put to bed. |
