When a River is Rough or Difficult (from the river difficulty at the top left chart on page 71), does this effect only apply to movement rates or also to combat? That is, is the only combat effect of the river the +1 for defending the bank?
Do you get a +1 defending the bank of a dry riverbed?
Do you get a +1 defending the exit to a bridge or ford? (Does “cross without penalty†mean there’s no penalty to movement and fighting or just movement.) |

The definitions on p71 and p72 provide all the answers;
- The type of terrain is variable, from clear to impassable, which may impose movement restrictions appropriate to that terrain type.
- All rivers give a +1 bonus to units fighting enemy across a bank (exactly the same as for a gully)
- Fords remove the movement restrictions, but not the fighting factors (p72). There seems to be no distinction between a ford and a bridge, so treat them exactly the same.
