Do the rules envision the following sequencing or some other?
1. Defender places camp
2. Attacker places camp
3. Both players simultaneously write out deployment instructions and who is ambushing
4. Defender places ambush markers
5. Attacker places ambush markers
6. Defender deploys first command, etc. |

I'm not sure why you made this post:
For 1 and 2 P.76 makes clear that defender places first followed by attacker.
For 4 and 5 P.77 makes clear that defender places first followed by attacker.
For 6 P.78 makes clear that defender places first followed by attacker. |

Fair enough.
Do both players have to write deployments orders (including which units are in which ambush marker) before either player places said ambush markers on the table?
As I read the rules on sequencing (“Set Up … stepsâ€) on the top left of page 73, it seems you do, but this seems a bit unnatural. It would seem to be more natural for a player to write down who is in which ambush marker when or after he places the marker on the table. This “natural†way of doing it would (slightly) advantage the attacker who can see where the defender’s markers are when he decides who is in each of his ambush markers.
The way the rules seem to require this be done is less advantageous to the attacker, but also requires players to say who is in the ambush before actually choosing the ambush location, something that seems “unnatural†to me. (If I haven’t yet defined exactly where the ambush spot is, how do I know how many of what sort of a ambushes can hide there.) I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.
Thanks for your patience. |

You’re over-thinking this kevin. It’s simply a fun game of toy soldiers.
Amongst my group of regular players I simply put down 3 dice next to each other (left to right) showing each corps’ deployment relationship. I announce aloud whether or not I am going to flank march. I simply leave any ambush units in my box - it’s always obvious which marker they belong to. All this takes about 2 minutes and we’re quickly into moving and shooting; no double entry book keeping paperwork for me!
Don’t sweat the small stuff! 😆 |

Kevin,
You write simultaneous. Often people put out their ambush markers so they see them , but you are correct there is no I see an ambush marker I am writing a different kind of deployment.
In part it really matters less in practice. In practice avoid the time wasting is an important objective. |
