conforming after a melee (p.65) applies to "units front corner against front corner or side by side". L3 is not: not in a melee, not caugh by rear.

I have remembered another way two units could end up side by side - if one had made a Pursuit (p62) move. However the situation would be dealt with in the same way.

You're right, the quarter turn of the unit in edge-to-edge contact is a "Conformation after a melee" (p55). Embarassed I blame my age! Confused
