Had a situation where a knight destroyed a med foot supporting an elephant. A cav unit charged a li in front of the elephant and it evaded but stopped 1/2 UD FROM ELEPHANT.  The elephant wanted to conform on the knight but was ZOCED by the cavalry  Could not find the answer in the FAQ It was decided that the elephant couldn’t conform even though it was in corner to corner contact. Was this correct

FAQ p.5
"When a unit or group is in or enters an enemy ZOC (including conformation page 52), the only permitted movement must be made with respect to the most threatening enemy unit

The most threatening enemy unit is, in the following order of priority:
- The nearest one who's ZOC covers part of the unit's front edge........."

Thinking out loud here - could Pg 7 of the FAQs also apply and allow the Elephant to conform?

Citation:
The last paragraph on page 28 should therefore be modified by the following sentence: "A unit can not slide when it is in an enemy ZOC, except: 
to charge the most threatening enemy, 
to come to conform with an enemy it was able to engage in meleeâ€

I think that the corner to corner existing contact could mean the elephant is "able to engage in melee" with the knights and that the slide to conform is ok in these circumstances?
The illustration used shows two examples where the slide is to charge the "most threatening enemy", which is covered by the 1st bullet point above; the 2nd bullet point suggests to me that an enemy other than "the most threatening" one is referred to?
Thoughts?

No

The previous quote and post made it clear that any movement in a ZOC can only be done in reference to the most threatening enemy.

Sliding out of a ZOC to engage a new, non-ZoCing enemy fails that test

Ok, so what do you think the 2nd bullet point refers to?

This is one of those kind of questions where a diagram is essential to understand the exact situation.

Zoltan and Madaxeman are correct that reacting to “the most threatening enemy†takes precedence over “conforming after a meleeâ€. Check p20, top diagram for an example.

Having destroyed its opponent in the previous round of melee, the Blue HI would normally have the option of conforming on the Red HI. However it is in the ZoC of a Red MI that covers its flank, making the red MI the most threatening unit, thus preventing conformation.

It permits sliding to conform to the most threatening enemy who is ZOCing you.

Without this general exception to the 'no sliding in a ZOC' rule (allowing sliding in a ZOC to conform) it would be practically impossible to conform to any enemy units.
