Prior to the medieval competition at Plymouth in two weeks time Tony Rodwell and other SELWEG player have found what appears to be an anomaly with regard to the effect of stakes, discussion with players at Godendag this weekend failed to resolve the issue.

The rules define stakes on page 18, and I note that they are specifically NOT fortifications (see p60).

Page 18 very clearly sets out how stakes are to be deployed and their effect on the initial combat when mounted troops charge home.

The difficulty come when there is a continued combat into a second and subsequent move. The QRS (in the Abilities box) seems to say that the -2 penalty applies at all times, the rules (p18) say the -2 applies when mounted charge the foot protected by the stakes but makes no mention of a continued fight. The QRS also says that the mounted take a -2 if attacking stakes (melee box). I understand that attacking is the same as charging but am aware that could be open to different opinions. The question is does the mounted troop (except El) continue to take the -2?

1. Have I missed something in the rules?
2. Is there a translation "error" on the QRS, for example using the melee when it should be read as attacking in the original french
3. Is the QRS a hangover from a previous version of the rules?
4. What did el creator intend?

As someone who is likely to be asked to rule on this in Plymouth I am minded to say that the -2 only applies in the move the mounted move into contact with the foot with stakes, in any subsequent moves the stakes have no further effect (unlike fortifications). If there is a conformation by the sideways shift because the mounted are in corner to corner contact with a foot unit with stakes they have no effect (because impact etc. does not count anyway and I view this as a continuation of what was happening before the conformation).

In addition I strongly feel that it is the rules, not a QRS, that should take precedence.

Any guidance or help would be gratefully recieved

Andrew

Clearly, it's a bad translation from french:
in french ruleset " les montés ont un malus de -2 au combat sauf si ce sont des éléphants"
translation: "mounted troops, except elephants, suffers -2 penalty in melee". You can compare with english version P18, it's not the same.

So mounted always suffer -2 penalties when fighting across stakes

thank you for a very rapid and helpful response.

for those of us using the English version of the rules perhaps we should change the sixth bullet point for stakes , substituting fighting for the word charging?

Yes, i was surprised by english rulebook's version, as it's said malus only applies against foot ( behind stakes). But only longbowmen may have stakes, so...

Does it cost a CP per unit to place and remove stakes, or is it one CP for a group of longbowmen?

I believe it was stated that a group move is allowed. There was a thread on it about 2-4 years ago.
