Simple question, why aren’t Celtic, Galic, Pictish, etc. chariots classified as Impetuous?
Thanks,

Why not ?
I suppose it's because these people were not using them as an impact weapon but more like a way to move around, close enough to throw a javelin or two.

Oh you’re right! That’s really what they should be, javelins... it fits perfectly the accounts given by how they historically operated.Â
So thus the question now is, why don’t celtic chariots have the javelin ability? |

The chariot question is a long debated topic in gaming. The "light chariot" is that more like light cavalry or more like formed cavalry. The skirmishing harassing roll sounds less formed. The massed archery firing that was a feature of the Mesopotamia chariotry suggest more dense formations for effect.
In ADLG there are no shooting javelin cavalry. Maybe there should be, but there is not. I think much of the mass cavalry with javelin (that would be plain MC or HC) assumes they have it for near or close combat not sustained missile fire.
The game effect of LCH vs MI is similar to having a javelin ability so it all does sort out in the factors.
I don't recall these chariots having massed shooting ability on the battlefield. More isolated skirmishing. |

Thanks for the response Hazelbark. I will have to dig it up, but I remember Caesar giving a detailed account of how Celtic chariots functioned. Something along the lines of riding back and forth taunting the enemy while throwing spears while the chariot was moving. He did say this would break up untrained formations. Then the chariot riders would dismount to fight in combat but could remount at a moments notice.
The dismounting and remounting would be hard to translate into game terms, however this could just be explained away in the abstract of melee for the chariots. The javelin portion sounds like a bit like how I envision LCh with Javelin would function in game. Just food for thought if they ever do a v4! |
