|
I'm finding that many modern 28mm figures to be used as Heavy Infantry simply cannot feasibly fit 4 across per 60mm base. They can however, comfortably fit 3 across.
Many of the photos of 28mm units in the rulebook show 28mm Heavy Infantry 3 across per base (so 6 figures per base). e.g. p 11, p 33, p 44, p 62, p 111, p 133.
Based 6 per base will mean the only visual difference between HI and MI would be base depth, unless you have proportionally fewer figures again on a MI base, e.g. 4 per base. Probably not ideal.
The obvious alternative is to go with 80mm bases, as the rules actually suggest for 28mm figures. That would allow 4 across per base without problem.
A similar issue exists with some 28mm mounted figures: 3 across on 80mm frontage is no problem; not so easy on a 60mm frontage. If you reduce Kn/Cv to 2 across per base, what do you do with LC - 1 per base? Again, not a great look.
So which method do 28mm players favour? Less figures on 60mm bases? Normal amount of figures on 80mm bases?

Stick with 60mm widths. you will find more opponents. |

Yes, I've now seen even more examples of 28mm HI based in 3's, with the deeper ranks the only visual difference between HI and MI.
I must say I'm tempted to base hairy barbarians on the 6cm deep base, in 3 ranks like Pikes. Gives it that deep warband column look. Close order barbarians would be in 3 rows of 3 (with the more dynamic poses in the first couple of ranks). Loose order barbarians could be 2/3/2 or some similar combination. Really portrays the impression of deep hairy masses vs 'Small But Perfectly Formed' regular units. Quantity vs Quality. And the deep close order warband looks particularly unmaneuverable, which is another 'tick'. Additionally, this would support the accounts of the barbarians being in larger numbers than their 'civilized' opponents (which may or may not have sometimes been exaggerated). Plus, support troops such as cavalry and light infantry now appear more numerically 'proportional' (i.e. fewer) relative to the masses of foot warriors. Best of all, it looks very intimidating - perfect for Germanic & Celtic nutters!
I don't see a problem with this (yet), apart from a little extra painting. Thoughts? _________________ "When one goes, one must go with style." |

I think is good More visual, some "mass effect" always great on table.
What is important is keeping 60mm front base for 28mm. In France the 2 principals tournaments (Antika on Bordeaux and Frontika on Toulouse) are on this scale. _________________ Hasta la victoria Siempre!

There's no problem with whatever you do, as long as the base widths are 60mm and the different troop types are clearly identifiable.
Here's some HI on 60x40mm, and which are a mix of 8's and 7's on the base.
6 figures on 60x60

Yup, I'm sold.
Really looking forward to doing 9 figures of Frankish nutters on 6cm x 6cm bases. In fact, I think I'd use 6cm square bases for most things, except 6x4cm for 'Regular' HI (but not Pikes), and 6x3cm for LI. Pikes would either be 6x6cm or 6x8cm.
Gotta work out that first order for Gripping Beast + some Foundry & Footsore.
