I've been painting/playing a Free Company force, but I want something more in-period for Classical and Roman era games. A couple of players in the local group have Indians (Classical and Tamil) and I'm thinking of getting in on the Elephant action with Gupta Classical Indians. Any thoughts on the following 200 AR list?
General - Competent
2 Elephants Elite
3 Medium Swordsmen/Bowmen
2 Light Infantry
Commander - Competent
2 Elephants Elite
3 Medium Swordsmen/Bowmen
2 Light Infantry
Commander - Ordinary
2 Heavy Cavalry Impact Elite
2 Heavy Chariot Impetuous Elite
2 Light Cavalry Javelin
That gives me 2 solid Elephant commands and a third somewhat survivable command. I'm considering dropping the two chariots for two more Cav units, which would make the group faster and more maneuverable, but not as hard-hitting. |

I do love me some pachyderms, and I have played a list similar to yours with some success.
Personally, I prefer the Tamil list to the Classical. Bowmen are pretty underpowered in this game, and even making them mediocre swords in melee is not enough of a boost when any decent impact or impetuous cavalry gives you only one shot before they charge home and slaughter you. Granted, the elephants help, but against heavy foot the mixed troops are a bit of a liability.
My Tamil list, from 150 BCE
Sub Included in an elephant ordinary unit
4x Medium Sword impetuous
1x Elephant Ord.
2x LI Javelin
2x Bowmen Ord.
Sub included in an Elephant unit
4x Medium Swd Impetuous
1x Elephant Ord
2x LI Javelin
2x BowmenOrdinary
CiC (not included) Ord.
2x Ordinary Elephants
2x LI Bow
2x Guardsmen (MI Impact elite)
200 points, 0 init., 26 units
If you don't mind getting a bit smaller you can use the CHola option and upgrade some of the impetuous foot to impact. I do not find fancy generals very useful, as your most important troops can't be rallied. Find a pile of enemy foot and smash it. Subtlety is for wimps! _________________ Tabletop miniatures are the only completely honorable form of warfare ever invented. |

Tamil's were a close second, so how about this list:
General - Ordinary
2 Elephant
2 Light Infantry Bow
2 Medium Swordsmen Impact Elite
1 Medium Swordsmen Impetuous
Commander - Ordinary
2 Elephant
2 Light Infantry Javelin
2 Medium Swordsmen Impact
1 Medium Swordsmen Impetuous
2 Bowmen Mediocre
Commander - Ordinary
2 Elephant
2 Light Infantry Javelin
2 Medium Swordsmen Impact
1 Medium Swordsmen Impetuous
2 Bowmen Mediocre
25 units with six elephants. Bowmen are here to mostly provide flank support for the big commands, which flank the general's. Battle plan is to just roll forward into combat. |

Indians will definitely provide a change of pace from Free Companies. Unfortunately, the first army isn't legal per the lists.
The Guptas can't have any chariots.
With the Tamils it makes sense to concentrate the impetuous foot in one command with a brilliant general just so you can control them.
To get some idea of what can be done with elephants take a look at Madaxeman's wiki:

Ah, hadn't realized that the Gupta Lancers replaced the Chariots in the list. However, since the points are equal, I suppose I could pick and choose whether I want to include the Chariots or the Lancers. |

Gupta lancers replace cavalery, so guptas may have chariots.
I know, it's historicaly wrong, but permitted by rule! _________________ "Quand on a pas de technique, faut y aller à la zob"
