What thoughts are there about how people design their commands?

I am seeing them organized by type, Cavalry / Infantry
I have seen them organized by mission Terrain infiltration, Sweeping cavalry, hold the line, Flank March.

What is different with LADG is you have to have your commands set up before you see the board.

I normally build my corps about there task. One big one for mainbattleline, one for careing terrain and the flank of the mainbattleline. The 3rd is usually cav for a flankmarch or if the terrin fits for careing the other flank of the flanl.

But its alway s a lot about the army itself. Parthians and Romens perhaps are totally different.

The main answer you have to give is your different corps mission. Then, your specific corps composition may induce some choice :
with imetuous units, except if you have decided, wathever situation you encouter to push forward, you need a brillant general in order to be certain to control your units with a 1 on PIP dice.
Same if you have a mixed arms corps with infantry light and heavy with mounted troops. You need at least a competent general
Unmanoeuvrable units need also some expertise in command, at least a competent, except if your tactical doctrine is to move forward with them.
Your overall battle order and deployment must be made in order to be able to act just enough with 3 "1" on dice without beinng paralyzed.
If you have "easy" corps, mounted only, heavy infantry only etc... you may have ordinary generals.
Included generals have to be considerered carefully. They must be included at least in elite units and as armored as possible. They may represent a threat, strong enough to make your opponent cautious. Example: with 3 mongols MC bow elite, you place one HC impact bow elite general, no infantry would be fool enough to charge and you can continue to arrows to rain on it.
Having an unreliable general is not a big stuff. With an heavy infantry corps right in the middle of the table, with 2 LI in front of the line at each end, you may be certain that the ennemy will soon or later close below 4 UD. An d if you have at least a brillant CiC, each turn you are able to give 2 PIP to influence him. Those two options are very useful with costly units armies.
At least, the stratege general question. If your overall strategy is based on an all out offensive, needing fot that a high initiative , or the necessity of a strong terrain control (open or close) , do not hesitate and pay for him!

Thank you Commodore, that provides different insights I haven't thought of.
