This came up in a game awhile back and I forgot about it until now. Some impetuous cavalry is in rough going. The opponent brought up some cavalry in the open, within charge reach, but not in rough going. Do the impetuous cavalry have to charge it? According to the rules it seems pretty clear to me that the answer is yes. Once the cavalry is in the rough it is no longer excluded by "...cause the unit to enter..." because it's already in.
So two questions:
- have I got this right or have I missed something?
- is that the intent? |

I do think you have it right.
Can't speak for intent.
But is seems very clear. I am sure the idea is clarity so once units are in the muck they maintain their natural tendencies.
IIRC other rule systems tried different wording that would allow weird exploitations like putting troops in muck to increase command and control.
So I am glad this is clear. |

Agreed. I got the same confirmation elsewhere.
While troops may choose not to be sucked into terrain that is disadvantageous to them, they cannot avoid being sucked into terrain that is not disadvantageous. Usually this means that troops can be forced to charge or conform into the open. The exception is LI for whom open terrain is disadvantageous, so they can refuse to conform partially or completely into the open. |

Thanks Dan.
I think that's as it should be.
The effect is if an impetuous troop is in disadvantageous terrain already, he might have to charge someone in the same terrain. The exclusion doesn't preclude that. |
