P 78 says all units not in ambush must be deployed in command range. “All units (unless in ambush) must be in command range of their commander.†This means the unit itself, and not just the group to which it belongs, must be in command range, right? Or is that not how people play it?

I am struggling to recall anyone ever even considering, or picking up on this rule during their, or their opponents deployment during any game I've ever played - so whether the phrase "All units (unless in ambush) must be in command range of their Commander" means "All units (unless in ambush) must be in command range of their Commander", or something entirely different appears to be somewhat moot anyway.

Hi Kevin,

I've always taken it as being that the group is in command range. I have also brought up this rule and had it brought up to me during a game.

There was a discussion about this previously from another angle about the corp general being in an ambush and other units of that corp being deployed on the table.

Andy

The wording on page 78 of the English version is absolutely clear, all UNITs in a Corp must be deployed within its Commanders command range, no mention of groups.
Is anyone able to post the French wording of that section of the ADLG french edition of the rules?

P.26, left column, sentence 2. The definition of command range clearly allows for units OR groups (of units) to satisfy the requirement of being within command range.

That’s for sending an order to move a group, not a unit. If you try to do something with a unit it of command range but part if a group not doing the action, then the unit is out of command range. Deployment is by units not groups.

Adrian is right, let’s see what the French says to understand the meaning behind what’s written.

Tim you give me a laugh!
Do you realize you have just asserted that any Rule as Written has no decidable meaning? Very Happy

P.26 defines what Command Range is and how it works. Wherever you see the term Command Range, apply the applicable points on p.26. viz “units or groupâ€.

Why are you fretting about this petite point? Live a little and enjoy life!

The more usual question is where the CinC has to be positioned if only some of the units are in ambush.

The Answer is that the CinC must be deployed on the table and in range of the ambush marker.

And yes, this applies to both unit and group, as others had mentioned above.

Umm - are you sure? I see two issues with your answer.

1. Why specify only the CinC? Surely the same rules apply to all commanders with troops in ambush. It is true that the CinC may not be deployed in ambush but that is a different thing.
2. Page 78 says that troops in ambush do not need to be in command range of their commander. So why would the ambush marker have to be? Never seen it played that way.

I think it's the question the other way - If the commander is in ambush, but there are, say, a couple of LH units on the table, how is command range measured?

If the commanders base is still in your storage tin, I would hope we can all agree that it's rather unlikely that it will be within command range of any of your on-table units.

As I recall, there was extensive discussion about this here. I'd be surprised if you were not a participant. It did not gel into a consensus. [Appears my memory failed me. The issue was indeed resolved by Hervé. The discussion is even on the first page.]

The DT has ruled that a command base must be on the board and not in ambush if some of the command is not in ambush.

Thanks, Dan.

How about if the command is split between two ambushes, #1 includes commander #2 includes some other troops. If #2 is discovered/placed on table can it trace command range from marker #1 or is it out of range until #1 is on the table? Can #1 claim bonuses (competent/brilliant) to the CP roll while in ambush?
