A unit of bowmen was partly in terrain - front was out of terrain and flank was half in and half out.
A unit of LI wanted to charge the flank.
P52 'Contract Restrictions' says LI can only charge an enemy if the target is in rough or difficult terrain and .... attacked in the flank or rear....
So the LMI were partially in the open, and partially in the terrain.
P57 'Terrain modifiers' says "a unit receives a penalty for being in the terrain if any part of its base is situated in the terrain".
So we judged that the LMI were in terrain and the LI would hit the flank, so the LI charge was allowed.
Everyone agree?
The LMI survived the initial melee, and would turn to conform (no other enemy unit was in contact with front) at the end of the melee phase.
Back to P52 'Destruction of LI' which says LI contacted at least partially in open terrain by a charging unit of LMI... whose front is entirely in open terrain. Not charging and front not entirelly in open terrain so not relevant.
LI also destroyed if contacted in open terrain by an opponent other than light troops or elephants during the pursuit phase. Not in pursuit so not relevant.
So the LI fight on.
Not well as it turned out, but any issues? |

You question would be clearer with a draw but i think you'll find the answer in the official FAQ , page 14 "LI charging in rough or difficult terrain".

The initial position described seems to be very similar to unit A1 in the diagram at the bottom of p14 of the FAQ, which answers your question (as Patrick has said) regarding LI charging enemy affected by disrupting terrain.Â
Although the LMI foot is partially in the open (so may be considered to be fighting in terrain), the front edge of the LI must end up entirely inside the disrupting terrain.
When attacking a flank, the charging unit must conform correctly which would leave part of the LI front edge in the open (and thus an illegal contact). So in your case, the initial charge may not take place. |
