When a mounted army especially one with knights as it main strike force comes up against an Elephant army what is the general opinion on dismounting the knights or not? |

I dismount all the knights except one in each command. |

Definitely keep some of the knights mounted. If all dismount they become slow moving HI that can be screened out of the game. Keepng some mounted retains the threat of powerful mobile units. Most 'elephant' armies don't have more than 3 or 4, soometimes just 2, elephants. The elephants can't be everywhere. |

Depends on the elephants escorts. When fighting elephants you want to kill the escorts while taking as little damage from the elephants as possible. Even with the (-1) from the elephants impetuous/impact knights are quite dangerous for MI.
Dismounted knights remain pretty vulnerable to the elephants as well...they still only have 3 cohesion points and now suffer from furious charge, but in return fight at somewhat better factors (+1 vs. +2 instead of +0 vs. +3), but whether on foot or mounted the most likely outcome is to take 2 hits in the first round of combat... |

For my HYW French I would usually dismount only one corps.
Same is true vs massed Pike.
The foot slams in and absorbs at least one elephant. Then knights crash past flank.
The knights that go straight in throw a LI at the elephant to absorb one round of elephants. Pretty excellent chance you kill the escorts.
If you entirely dismount you have surrendered the initiative to a plodding foe.
I have out maneuvered elephants with impetuous knights.
Also trading one knight for one elephant is a fair price as your knights slaughter everything else. |
