How is the ability to shoot at a target adjudicated?

the diagram suggests full 4 UD range and 1 UD on either side. Its a rectangle and you are in or out.

Or do you measure the diagonal from the base of the firing unit and thus not fully achieve the full box. IE the corner of the diagrams is mathematically 4.12 UD and therefore you could not shoot.

Asking for others.

And note, the first sentence of p47 is at odds with the associated diagram where it says
Citation:
Arc of fire
A unit can shoot at a target at maximum range or less and in its arc of fire.
ie suggesting an arc based on the front corner of the firing unit, that can easily be measured using rods or sticks.

But then the text goes on to describe the diagram that includes the entire rectangle described in the diagram. . . . . Question

So far i've been doing the the "rectangle" version. Err...

Hopefully a simple ruling can be had. Smile

I've always assumed the text takes priority over any diagram.

Well hence the request for clarity from DT.
At Charleroi I was told the full box for clarity and ease, same theory as why the expansion moves are defined as by the unit not by the math.

But we await the DT.

I checked with Commodore another of the Technical Board.

His view was as follows, and I think we can now take this as the ‘official’ view unless the TB issue something different as a FAQ:-

P47 text states
- the firer must be in arc and in range.
- it then goes on to describe the normal arc of fire and special arcs.
Unfortunately the diagram is not quite correct because the front edge of the side arc should be curved, not straight. So in summary the front edge of the firing arc will be bowed, not rectangular.

The the diagram shows three targets in range
- on the left the RH corner is 4UD straight ahead.
- in the center 4UD straight ahead.
- on the right assume the unit is just inside 4UD from the corner of the firers.

Then that ruling will make it all the more difficult to actually measure whether you are in range or not - the idea in the posts from Hazelbark and Luddite seem to keep the rule nice and simple with little room for any game mechanics - a curved arc how do we determine that ?

It's still a straight line unit to unit.
So use a stick or rule.

Rectangular box would require a template to be made to measure range.
That's the harder method
