I'd hoped to have added the final piece to the jigsaw with a further analysis of the impact of new and returning players. This proved far more difficult than I expected. Not least because the BHGS data records events whilst the ADLG ELO data records games. I managed in the end.
I had to define new players as those with fewer than six games in their ADLG ELO record. That is played in one, three or five game, event. I assumed that the one event was that in the 2022-25 BHGS data set. Returning players had six or more.
44 (18% of 239) BHGS players attended just one event in 2022-25. Of these 25 (10% of 239) had attended one event in 2022-24 and hadn't played a second by 2025. The 25 players breaks down into 10 new and 15 returning players. Clearly, some of the new & returning players are not becoming regular players (yet?).
43 (13% of 341) ADLG ELO players from GB & Ireland are without a corresponding BHGS record in 2022-25 and had recorded fewer than six games. This identifies more "one-off" players who tried tournament play never to return.
To combine some of the above, there are some 53 (43+10 of 341) GB & Ireland players who've tried tournament play once and have never been tempted back (as of 2025).
In summary, the data is less than ideal and the analysis is complicated. Nonetheless it is clear that some 53 (16% of 341) new ADLG players attended just one ADLG tournament between 2019-25. There's a further 15 (4% of 341) returning players who have yet to attend regularly post-Covid.
I have updated the full data set or dashboard to include a table dealing with the above.

That's it done. No more. Never. Ever! Honest.
Merry Christmas everyone. _________________ Martin Stephenson

FYI the BHGS rankings don’t include events held in Ireland.
This is a deliberate omission, as Ireland is not part of Great Britain, and so falls outside of the remit of the BHGS.
The Irish circuit is fairly small, with less than half a dozen events each year.
Reasonable numbers of Irish players have made it over to attend events in the UK/GB, most notably Warfare each year, and so will appear in the BHGS rankings in years when they attend - in the same way as players from other countries do also - although this will inevitably mean many of them will only make one appearance per year, or once or twice in the years 22-25. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |
